Background of the Study
Mobile learning applications have revolutionized education by making learning more flexible, accessible, and personalized. In secondary schools, mobile learning applications can enhance student engagement, support individualized learning paths, and provide a more interactive way to absorb information (Adamu & Zakari, 2023). In Lokoja Local Government Area, Kogi State, mobile learning applications have been introduced in an attempt to bridge the gap between traditional learning methods and the digital age. These applications, ranging from educational games to interactive textbooks, can support subjects such as mathematics, science, and language learning.

However, while mobile learning applications hold great promise, their adoption in Lokoja has been limited due to challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, low internet connectivity, and a lack of training for teachers and students on how to effectively use these technologies (Olamide & Sulaimon, 2024). This study will investigate the extent to which mobile learning applications are being used in secondary schools in Lokoja and their impact on student learning experiences.

Statement of the Problem
Despite the potential benefits of mobile learning applications, their usage in secondary schools in Lokoja is still not widespread. Many students and teachers face challenges such as limited access to mobile devices, poor internet connectivity, and a lack of understanding about how to use these tools effectively. This study aims to investigate the extent of mobile learning application usage in Lokoja’s secondary schools and assess the benefits and barriers associated with their use.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To investigate the use of mobile learning applications in secondary schools in Lokoja.

  2. To assess the impact of mobile learning applications on student engagement and academic performance.

  3. To identify the challenges faced by teachers and students in using mobile learning applications in Lokoja’s secondary schools.

Research Questions

  1. To what extent are mobile learning applications used in secondary schools in Lokoja?

  2. How do mobile learning applications impact student engagement and academic performance in Lokoja’s secondary schools?

  3. What challenges do teachers and students face in using mobile learning applications in Lokoja?

Research Hypotheses

  1. The use of mobile learning applications enhances student engagement and academic performance in secondary schools in Lokoja.

  2. Mobile learning applications improve the effectiveness of learning in secondary schools in Lokoja.

  3. Limited access to devices and poor internet connectivity hinder the widespread use of mobile learning applications in Lokoja’s secondary schools.

Significance of the Study
This study will contribute to the understanding of how mobile learning applications can enhance educational experiences in secondary schools. The findings will help inform decisions about the integration of mobile learning technologies into teaching practices, improving student engagement and outcomes in Lokoja.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on secondary schools within Lokoja Local Government Area, Kogi State. It will not include other areas within the state or different educational levels. Limitations include potential resistance to new technologies, variations in infrastructure, and differing levels of teacher and student readiness for mobile learning.
